If one of your employees wears this to work, tell that person to GTHO!

On Monday, I blogged (here) about a manager who commented on the hands of a female employee who had suffered severe nerve damages to them after a car accident. He called her hands “disgusting.”

It didn’t end well for the employer.

Over on LinkedIn, we discussed that case in further detail here. One of the folks who commented on the post made the obvious point that commenting on another’s appearance is something you just don’t do in the workplace. And I agree. Except, when it comes to the dress code. When an employee violates the dress code, at the very least, you need to counsel that person about it.

Now, I’m not saying that the person should be fired. If you’d asked me yesterday morning to imagine a dress code violation that would result in immediate termination of employment, I’d struggle to come up with anything other than something an employee might wear to work around Halloween to push the boundaries. But, if you asked me last night after I read this report on ABCnews.com, I’d say that you can add any of these school shooting hoodies that have bullet holes in them to the list. 😤🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️

According to a separate report from Paper Magazine, the company that designed the hoodies — I won’t mention the name here — defended them in this statement, which reads like someone’s ramblings on a bad mushroom trip.

Let’s not mince words, ‘ironic’ or not, these hoodies are outrageously offensive and should never be found in your workplace, let alone any retail store.
